Francie Manhardt

Francie has always been fascinated by language. That’s why she studied Linguistics in her Bachelor’s in Leipzig. From Germany, she came to the Netherlands to follow a Master’s in Linguistics in 2014. After graduating she worked as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen and then started her PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and Radboud University in 2016.

She is passionate about sign languages and how we process language. That’s why she merged these two into one dream project and examines how the different means of using a visual language influences the way signers talk and attend to world. She also followed a traineeship in which she learned how to translate music into visual music using Dutch Sign Language.

When she is not day and night writing on her PhD thesis, Francie also likes to run, cook amazing food, bake fancy cakes, and to knit from giant blankets to simple and cozy socks.
